Who are you and what, if anything, have you contributed to life as we know it? I'm not talking DNA.
What have YOU done to improve life? Giving birth doesn't count even though your kids are smart.
Me? I taught several children how to play a guitar. But that's not all, I taught 'em how to read.

Doo dah doo dah diddly diddly dum dum.

Good on you, Simpleton. Good all over you.
I fed a little black orphan I called 'Waif' that was faster than a glance.
Now she's Lil' Bit, at home and she's asleep all over the bed.
      She's still skinny as a nail and healthy as a vet bill, but she's a lap-whore. >You have a lap, she's available<
      "It's just a cat!"
      Yeah, right.

If teaching children is a good thing, then I attended my daughter's school (in the USA) and talked about life in England.
Later they were having a math lesson, and I got to teach them the lattice method of long multiplication, so much by the end of the hour class they all could multiply two 5 digit numbers with ease, which the teacher was impressed with. They still had to learn the standard way (with columns, etc), but they could then check their answers themselves by using the easier method!

I don't feel comfortable talking about my own contributions, but I'd like to say that I think good teachers are one of society's most valuable and admirable types of people. :)

it comes naturally to me, but i see people's creativity and talent and remind them to tap into it and to use it for the rest of their life. nothing formal, but it has changed a lot of people's lives.

i remember being drunk one night at a pub in SF and teasing one young girl mercilessly as she talked about how she admired her friends art talents, yet they had both gone to art school. she was working in a law firm. my teasing grew more intense as the alcohol flowed, and i made a point of calling her a week later to apologize. she happily announced that she had quit her job, and taken a job as a photographer's assistant and submitted some of her older work to an agent to rep her. she *thanked* me for my drunken ranting.

i do a lot of other stuff too (volunteer, support artists financially, protest at political rallies, help with fund raising campaigns, even moderate tribes here), but encouraging people's creativity is the thing that i contribute most to. it happens at the grocery store counter, it happens anywhere and everywhere.

I have been a tutor to special needs-students (Blind) and non-english speaking students.

I have also brought joy through music to many by being a DJ on a community radio station!

I am also very polite in my daily activities and hope that it makes people happy and kind of want to be nice in return.

I sing to people. Yeah, I love singing and making music for myself. But the best part is when someone gets a lift or sheds a tear or remembers family and friends and good times. Our audiences are still small enough to see those tears and smiles.

I volunteered with a community service group called Rotaract in my youth (a spin off of Rotary). I held a blind girl's arm while she showed me how to see the world through her eyes. I volunteer now with Cubs and Scouts and watch 40 kids discover the world in their own ways.

      Teachers. Yea!
Good teachers are rare jewels that make you want to learn more.
      Bad ones are a PITA.
Good ones push the 'Curiosity' button and learn as they teach. If they don't know the answer to a question, they'll find it.
Bad ones bore the hell out of students because they've quit learning.

I can't say enough about volunteers. Sharing because you're needed and you cant 'not'.

It isn't much, but I give out random hugs to people who need them. So far I haven't offended anyone. I just seem to know when people need a hug. I always need one....so maybe it is selfish?

I worked a suicide hotline once a week for a year. I tutored residents of an old folks home on how to use the internet. (It's not my fault if they became addicted to internet porn or gambling -really!). I also essentially donated my body to science for a couple years - I was a prize guineau pig and got medication and monitoring for my digestive disease in return. That medication was just approved by the FDA last month.
