this is difficult to answer, on many things i am smarter but also on many things quite a bit dumber, many things that matter in the world, i seem to have left out of my education, or ahve been denied due to crazy upbringing. but on the whole, i would , in general, say smarter.

Well, I must admit, truthfully i am surrounded by idiots.
Seriously. And I feel a dedregraion in my level of intelengence because I constantly deal with morons. You need to lower you're vocabulry and your IQ level just to deal with these 'people'.
I have to lower my IQ 30 points just so I can talk with my supervisores on their level.
Holy moly That says a lot, and I work with several intelegent people. But Curtis isn' one. Steve needs professional help.
Me, I'm beyond repair.
Gator, laters! And dock awhiles!

Difficult question and I reckon it depends on the subject. On a lot of points my friends will ask me for advice and I'm sure there must be something I'd ask them, just can't think what it is at present.

I think that I tend to gravitate toward people I perceive to be smarter than me, because I hope that I will learn from them. And then, having made the approach, I discover that I am intimidated by them or that I am annoyed by their egos...
I then seem to wander off and find people I perceive to be less threatening because of the unpleasant by-products of their smart-y-ness, and then I am bored by the lack of anything sparking in that corner.
The thing is, if I stick it out through the initial overthinking/ wacky self-obsessed anxiety ridden parts of it all, I find that the people I thought were too smart for me are really just people, and the people I thought were less smart are really just people, and I'm not really any kind of a standard against which to measure anyone else, even for my own purposes, (I'm sometimes smarter or less smart than me, too!)
I also agree with many here; smart is a pretty open field. My brother kicks my ass at chess every time I am feeling masochistic enough to play against him. He also hasn't read an actual book in years. Smart or not smart... You play chess with him and see how smart you feel after about 3 moves. Quoting Camus at him won't make your Queen come back from the dead, I tell ya.
If I had to sort of pull out the giant scales and toss the smart types on one side and the less smart on the other, it would currently dip dramatically to the smart side. But I'm not sure which side I would be likely to weigh in on, and I'd actually be most amused at just standing back and watching them all decide how to divide themselves, (as I certainly wouldn't be the one standing there with a clipboard calling out names and point to the appropriate scale. )
[not sure I actually answered the question.] -

Well..lets see...there's different sorts of intelligence.
I sorta had learning and developmental problems growing up..i was a complete space cadette in school, but my test scores were so high that I gradually weasled my way into 'gifted' classes....where I was then perceived as being "dumber" than the rest of the class...because I was still akward and not a good student.
As an adult...I guess I would say that i am dumber than most of my peers intellectually, but i excell at arts and crafts.

I really enjoyed the responses to the question. I asked because I've been noticing that a lot of people are so hung up on a self-image of intellectual superiority that as they expend effort showing off how smart they are they actually come off looking like complete idiots. And a person can learn a lot from uneducated people who can't spell. In fact some of the most intelligient people I've ever met were uneducated people who can't spell. And some uneducated people have a gift for spelling.
I agree with most of you - I have gifts in some areas and am as dumb as a post in other areas. ;<)

Computers, math, etc, I'm smarter.
Reading two meanings into what people say (or type) - smarter, but is that a good thing?
Picking up on non-verbal queues in conversations - I'm an idiot.

Oh, Magic 8 Ball... tell me true....is Snert a big smartypants?

i live in a town where every other grocery store clerk has an advanced degree. and they still don't pack my groceries right. i am also aquainted with a woman who tests out in the top 1/2 % of people in the us(who have been tested) she is one of the kindest, most tolerant, least judgemental people i know. i have only once seen her overwhelm someone with her brains and that was a person who was trying to belittle other people in the room for not being smart. so, intelligence or education don't really matter to me. what matters and my question for you would be:
ARE YOU MORE OR LESS KIND THAN THOSE AROUND YOU?
and simpleton, quit playing with my magic eight ball. you'll break it.

I tend to surround my self with people who are near my intelligence level or higher. So I am average :) but I know especially when I meet new people and they try to listen in on conversations that I am having with my partner, or my close friends and they have that look of I have no Idea what you guys are even talking about.
I know that I am more intelligent on a lot of subjects than the average person - but of those I know  we all have the areas we know a lot about and others not so much :) but we like to talk and teach each other :) this is why I love my friends
