Re: squirrels?
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 3:56 PMYes, they're very cute. Until they are eating the fruit off your trees and dropping it, half-eaten, all across your yard. Until they are digging up your flower bulbs. Until they are emptying out your birdfeeder. Oh, wait - I'M a squirrel! -

Re: squirrels?
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 4:08 PMThey are essentially rats. Rats with big, beautiful bushy tails. Remind me to tell you about the rat in Golden Gate Park that was masquerading as a squirrel. -

Re: squirrels?
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 4:48 PMAround here we call them tree rats and they're pests.
Cute lil' rodents, but pests.
Umm, I think Home Handyman magazine has an issue devoted to problems like squirrles, bats and mice infesting your domicle, and what to do to get rid of the lil' bastards and to prevent them coming back. My Granny told me mothballs scattered around where they are would help, but I don't know.
I've got a low powered bb pistol that I shoot the lil bastards with. Stings but doesn't really hurt - I know, I shot myself with it. Ouch - oops!
S. Indiana - they're pests big time.
Then again, I've got a Winchester pellet rifle and I can use it for hunting those pesty, cute, lil' tree rats if I get hungry enough.
Survival takes many shapes and forms, doesn't it?
I'm a country boy and I noticed something. When you start out hunting specific game, that game seems to vanish.
You go hunting deer, tree rats and runny babbits are everywhere, but if you go hunting them, deer will get in your way.
So, carry a 410/22 over/under so you can shoot what tickles your tastebuds.
Hey, I eat what I shoot and I don't hunt for trophys. Who kills the meat you eat? -

Re: squirrels?
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 4:50 AMThey are terribly cute creatures...but not very nice...I had one chase me down the block in front of my school...he was trying to jump on me and climb me like a friggin' tree!
I have noticed a lot more actually, but more interestingly they aren't the regular brownish grey ones....I'm seeing more and more dark grey/black furred squrrels. Why is that? -

This happened to someone I knew in college. The squirrel ran up her leg like it was a tree. Maybe they are nearsighted? She, of course, freaked out, throwing down her books and jumping around flailing her arms until it left her alone. Apparently a bunch of people watching from a distance did not see the squirrel, however, just her freaking out. These moments of embarrassment last a lifetime....

Re: squirrels?
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 1:08 PMI learned a long time ago that squirrels are repelled by human hair. Go figure, but it's true. Google it yourself. Also, you could try this...makes sense to me that sound waves would ward off critters:

Re: squirrels?
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 3:41 PMDo they, perchance, have any Moron Repellent? Morons are a pest species.
And they don't mention obnoxious drunks, either. Another pest species.. -

Re: squirrels?
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 8:06 PMSquirrels tend to cycle with their food supply, as do the predators that prey on them. Out here in LA though we never have a shortage of cars, so they don't fair well for long. They get one chance to learn about cars and that is usually their last. Still, on occasion, the crows can find an extra large smear on the road, complete with stiffened tail, indicating through its demise, longevity of a sort.
I had one that decided the telephone pole by my parked car was a tree that belonged in its territory. Every day I'd go to get in my car and get cussed out on my way off to work. What a way to start the day, chewed out by a fuzz ball. Kind of sets the mood for the day, if you know what I mean. -

Haha I can totally picture that. That must have been a bit disconcerting. -

Re: squirrels?
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 4:11 PMSteve!
I'm a country boy and have been cussed out by squirrels, crows, blue jays and various and assorted wildlife. Got chased by a horny buck once that thought I was a threat. I love it. Also got hustled by a nanny goat once. She wasn't my type. I moved into the city years ago but I still get cussed by bluy jays and crows. I cuss 'em back. I threaten to shoot every tree-rat I see, and they will hide on the other side of the tree.
If you're a squirrel hunter, you will have a pocket fulll of gravel. So you can toss a piece of gravel on the other side and tree-rattus will slide over to your side. BANG - supper. I eat what I shoot. -

Re: squirrels?
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 10:24 PMHaven't hunted in years, and don’t keep a gun or rifle anymore because of my temper, but I do remember the tree trick. I also remember the family dog running around and around the trees yelling back at the little cuss' like that would do something magic and make the thing de-tree for some fido satisfaction. I used a slingshot for a while in the city and could nail 'em if and when. In a way though wildlife is a lot different for me now. Here in LA I look to the local possum as a kind of homespun welcome pet. They've way too much fat on 'em for my taste anyway. The look the ally cat gives that possum is worth the price of admission anyway, especially when it's eating the cat food.

Re: squirrels?
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 8:49 AMI just purchased a squirrel baffle for more than $30 off ebay. It's basically a cage to put around my tube birdfeeder. I swear, the bastard squirrels will just suck the thing dry in a day when I refill it. One day I saw a squirrel eating from the birdfeeder, and I just took a sack of potatoes outside and started throwing them at him. -

Re: squirrels?
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 10:23 AMdid he pick the potatoes up and run away with them?? -

Re: squirrels?
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 10:28 AMHe didn't care for the taters so much. I only find an occassional one with teethmarks in it. I have found a few half eaten oranges recently, which must be coming from my neighbor's orange tree. He grabs them and chews on them while traversing the fence in to my yard. -
