other income.

what other kinds of income do you receive besides a paycheck from your main employer? do any other jobs on the side? have any investments that pay you on a regular basis?

I collect a paycheck from my employer, but it certainly isn't enough to support my "rock and roll lifestyle". As such, I've had to diversify my income. real estate investments, rental income, clothing company, IRA, 401K, stocks...etc.

I'm poor (as far as I'm concerned) and have no "other income". I use to escort and deal drugs but decided I wanted to remain alive, out of prison, and disease free! : )

YEAH! I hear you Marvin. I might share, but I won't deal.
I spent a year and a half in IDOC for stupidity. I took the blame for a honey and got shafted. No,not that way; by the court system

I think probably one of the most effective ways to increase income is to consume less. Buy in bulk, freecycle, be a creative frugal, compare prices, etc. It's surpising how much flows through our fingers when we aren't paying attention.

I should start a freecycle group in my area or find out if there is one already. It sounds like alot of fun. Someone was talking about it on the Ethical Consumerism tribe last week I think. Please forgive if it was one of you guys & I don't remember. A lady was talking about how her friends and her have a get together and everyone brings things they don't need or use anymore and trades things. My only concern would be if more than one person really wanted the same thing. I wouldnt want there to be any hard feelings. There would have to be some amount of compromise. If everyone goes in with the idea of having fun would be good. It would have to not matter if the items were of equal value either. Like if one sweater originally cost 150 bux at Macy's and another item was 5 bux at a thrift store. OMG. I so want to do this now! lol

i'm with susan. it is surprising how much i have when i don't need much. i have been debt free for the last 15 years, am now able to give away nearly 25% of my income and save 25% regularly. i quit my regular job three years ago, started my own business, and work at what i like and only as much as i want. i probably am much poorer than many people, but i feel very rich.

I run. Occasionally I win money racing, but that doesn't happen as often as I'd like. It's a great way to start a t-shirt collection, though.

Aside from charitable giving (which I would like to do more of) I try to look at money in two ways. Recurring expenses (food, rent, etc.) and investments. An investment can take a number of different form but it has to be something that appreciates, that can be depreciated, that provides education, or that is liquid. I have a lot of 'things," that I once purchased or that people have given to me, or that I have found. I don't need much. The one thing I fear are 'structural,' expenses that never go away - medication that I would have to take for the rest of my life, for example. That's why I invest time and money in keeping myself healthy. The investment one makes in one's health definately appreciates.

I think you go to freecycle.org and see if there is a group in your area already. Ours is all by email. You post the things you want to get rid of and people offer to come by to pick it up. You ask for what you need, and if someone has an extra one they don't need, they offer to let you come take it off their hands. The only rule is that it must be completely free.

I've given away several useful items: a children's bicycle and lots of clothing, a table, bar stools, baby equipment. I've received a bread machine, books, some vhs and dvds, and clothing for my kids, all if it in good condition. It's been a lot of fun.

My main employer gives me the bulk of my funds, paid vacations, and health insurance...but I find I need to have work on the side for all the odds and ends in my life...so I have a bunch of private clients I treat for speech and language delays in their homes.

Very, very true! Managing well the money you already have is a great place to start!

other than my computer repair job - occasionally I will help friends and family with computers for a fee, or dinner...
I also make beaded jewlery and while I am making it people ask to buy them so I sell my creations for 15-30 dollars depending on the material I make them out of. (basically the hobby pays for itself, that is it)
And I sell things on ebay - things I was going to get rid of anyways

But I also rarely buy anything new or at full price. I love yardsaling and going into thrift stores... because I admit to being a shopaholic - I just can do it a lot cheaper than most people :)

In December - January the Goodwill near my home in West LA has an awesome selection. I don't need to shop at a regular store now that I've seen the pattern. People get rid of a lot of good stuff in Dec because of taxes. I got practically an entire wardrobe there recently...shoes, pants, tops, dresses, handbags...cute stuff and much of it brand names.

I have always shopped in thrift stores. I know people that won't wear used clothes. I got a bad ass sweater for 4 dollars a few weeks ago. Probably cost 40 - 80 bux new.

Haha. No fools. I would love to post a pic. Unfortunately I lost my camera a little over a year ago in a home robbery. If I could figure out how to take a pic with my webcam, maybe I can do that. I just haven't looked into how that might work yet. And no, I did not know about a thrift store tribe. I'll have to tell them...go to West LA/Brentwood and Beverly Hills (I imagine) Goodwills in Dec-Jan. It's rediculous.

I bartend on the side.....have nearly constantly for the last 26 years! I love it....to me it's like hosting a party, the money is good, it's a good social outlet, and it seldom puts me in danger! *wink* It's also a fairly safe place to flirt....by the time I walk out at 3am after cleaning the bar, no one is sticking around.
